Eaves Family Dental & BonaDent seek donations to help Vietnam vet in Penn Yan cover the medical expenses for his service dog
November 4, 2013 – Eaves Family Dental Group in Penn Yan is teaming up with BonaDent Dental Laboratories in Seneca Falls to pledge a combined $2,000 to help a disabled Vietnam veteran in Penn Yan cover the medical expenses for his service dog. Tom Devine, the owner of Bear, a German Shepherd, is seeking donations to help pay for the two hip replacements his service dog needs.
Eaves Family Dental and BonaDent are also urging other businesses and individuals to contribute as well. Among the current businesses contributing are Longs’ Cards and Books, Penn Yan Aero, Roto Salt and Stork Insurance.
In October 2012, Mr. Devine was partnered with Bear, a 4-month-old puppy at the time, though the K9s for Veterans program. However, at 13 months, veterinarians at Cornell University’s Veterinarian Hospital diagnosed Bear with hip dysplasia, an abnormal formation of the hip socket that can lead to crippling and painful arthritis.
Mr. Devine estimates the costs of each surgery, medication and physical therapy to cost $20,000. So far, nearly $6,000 in pledges has been collected using an online fundraising website.
Eaves Family Dental and BonaDent will add to the growing number of donations when they each present Mr. Devine $1,000 checks at a benefit this Friday. In addition, Dr. Kevin Wallace from Eaves Family Dental is making a personal contribution of $500.
The Care for Bear Dinner and Silent Auction will be this Friday, Nov. 8, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Starkey’s Lookout, 5428 Rte. 14, Dundee, N.Y.
“With Veterans Day right around the corner, this is an opportunity to show our gratitude and support for one of our local veterans,” said Dr. Edmund Eaves, DDS. “For more than 30 years, Eaves Family Dental has been committed to our community. We’re proud to contribute to Care for Bear and encourage other businesses and individuals to make a donation too.”
Dr. Kevin brings sleep medicine advancements to Eaves Family Dental Group
June 26, 2013 – Each year the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine (AADSM) holds a meeting inviting all dentists, physicians, scientists, and other health care professionals to learn about advancements in the field of sleep medicine, which attempts to treat patients that suffer from various sleep disorders. The 22nd Annual Meeting of the AADSM was held on May 30-June 1. The conference discussed management of sleep apnea in patients, developments in treatment for sleep apnea, as well as the best options for successful dental sleep medicine practices.
We are very fortunate that our very own Dr. Kevin was among the many dentists, physicians, and scientists that attended the AADSM Annual Meeting. The new dental practice is meeting the needs of the community with full range of cosmetic dentistry and general dentistry services, as well as 24-hour emergency dentistry.
“After the closing of the dental clinic, we knew families in Bath would have limited options for dental care,” said Dr. Edmund Eaves, DDS. “We acted quickly to ensure Eaves Family Dental Group would be able to meet the needs of the community with first-rate and family-friendly dental services.”

See your dentist for a better night’s sleep
Eaves Family Dental Group offers treatments for sleep apnea
February 1, 2013 – Millions of adults are affected by sleep apnea, a serious medical condition in which their breathing stops periodically during sleep. However, many struggle with the treatment or don’t know where to turn for help. Eaves Family Dental Group is looking to change that and help patients and their families, across the Finger Lakes, get a more restful night’s sleep.
“We want to help people, so raising awareness is the first step,” said Dr. Kevin Wallace, DDS, a member of the AADSM. “Working with a sleep specialist, we help ensure patients get the right diagnosis and the right treatment.”
According to the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine (AADSM), at least 12-18 million adults in the U.S. have obstructive sleep apnea, which can cause them to stop breathing hundreds of times a night for anywhere from a few seconds to more than a minute. Sleep apnea is a potentially life threatening condition that can increase the risk for serious health problems, such as heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, depression and impotence if left untreated.
While the standard sleep apnea treatment has been a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine and mask, dental sleep medicine is a growing segment of dentistry that focuses on oral appliance therapy (OAT). The AADSM estimates that up to 50 percent of sleep apnea patients do not comply with or tolerate CPAP.
OAT devices prevent the airway from collapsing by either holding the tongue or supporting the jaw in a forward position. While sleeping, patients wear a “mouth guard-like” device to maintain an open, unobstructed airway.
Often covered by medical insurance, OAT offers many valuable benefits. OAT devices can be more comfortable to wear than a CPAP mask, and they are also quiet, portable and easy to care for.
“Oral appliance therapy is relatively unknown but is a very effective treatment option for obstructive sleep apnea,” said Dr. Edmund Eaves, DDS, a member of the AADSM. “Not only does research suggest that OAT is as effective as CPAP, we know some patients are more likely to stick with it.”
Eaves Dental Expands to Better Serve Patients in Geneva
New Location Welcomes Community to Open House and Halloween Candy Buy-Back
October 31, 2012 – Eaves Family Dental Group has announced the opening of its new location in Geneva, N.Y. After serving more than 400 patients who live in the northern Seneca Lake area from its Penn Yan office, the practice’s founders recognized the opportunity to better serve these patients by moving closer to them. The office will begin seeing patients in the new space on Nov. 5.
In the meantime, to celebrate, Eaves Family Dental will welcome the Geneva community to an open house on Thursday, Nov. 1, from 3 p.m. – 6 p.m. During that time, the dentists and staff look forward to meeting new patients, catching up with existing patients, and exchanging hundreds of pounds of sticky Halloween candy for cash.
Eaves Family Dental has conducted the Halloween Candy Buy-Back in its Penn Yan office for four years. Parents and children receive $1 for every pound of candy they donate to U.S. military personnel deployed overseas. Last year, 42 pounds were collected from its single office; this year, the team hopes to double that amount.
“We’re dedicated to make oral health more accessible and affordable, but we can also make it fun,” said Dr. Edmund Eaves, DDS. “Parents and kids love our Halloween Candy Buy-Back. It’s been a tremendous success the last four years in our Penn Yan office, so we wanted to bring it to Geneva. The timing of our opening couldn’t be better, and we hope to see all our neighbors during the open house.”
Conveniently located at 64 Elizabeth Blackwell St., Suite B (corner of S. Exchange St. and Elizabeth Blackwell St.), the office will provide a full range of cosmetic dentistry and general dentistry services, such as teeth whitening, crowns, fillings, 24-hour emergency dentistry and several other dental services. Drs. Ed Eaves and Kevin Wallace will serve the new office, as will one dental hygienist.
“Like our office in Penn Yan, the Geneva office was designed with the comfort and convenience of our patients in mind,” said Dr. Kevin Wallace, DDS. “The new office features state-of-the-art dental technology and will continue to provide the high-quality and family-friendly services people expect from Eaves Family Dental.”
Eaves Family Dental Group will begin seeing patients in the Geneva office on Nov. 5, and welcomes new patients of all ages. The new office will be open Monday, Wednesday and Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (3 p.m. on Fridays). Call (315) 789-8899 for an appointment.
EFDG Team Receives Further Implant Training
July 2012 – A group of team members from Eaves Family Dental Group (EFDG) traveled to Toronto, Ontario for the International Congress of Oral Implantology's Spring Symposium. Dr. Ed attended classes on preventing and treating implant complications, and incorporating digital 3D imaging into implant treatment, as well as a presentation on the latest implant research and products.
Several members of the EFDG team also went. Jessi Eaves (Office Manager), Anne Olmstead (Clinical Team Leader), Sandy Montinarelli (Hygiene Coordinator), and Rachel Vanderwarker (Dental Assistant) attended the Auxiliary Program which was run in conjunction with the Doctors' Meeting.
The team learned more about the technical aspects of implants, as well as how to discuss implant treatments with patients more clearly, how to navigate the world of dental insurance in relation to implants, and how to maintain implants and teach patients about implant care so they can keep their implants for the rest of their life.
Dr. Ed says, "I love having the opportunity to know what is on the cutting edge of dentistry. The fact that the ICOI provides programs specifically designed for my team is a bonus. We can all learn together how to provide the best possible care for our patients."
