Vizilite Plus Oral Cancer Screening

In our continuing efforts to provide the most advanced technology and highest quality care available to you, Eaves Family Dental Group is proud to announce the inclusion of the Vizilite Plus exam as an integral part of your annual comprehensive oral cancer screening.

Oral Cancer Screening

What is oral cancer screening?

When oral cancer is found early, treatment can be successful 82% of the time. Unfortunately, when compared to the survival rate of other cancers, the survival rate of oral cancer has not improved greatly over the last 30 years.

Why do I need it?

  • Because early detection is key to survival, it is important to see your dentist regularly. This advanced oral cancer screening is used in conjunction with the standard visual examination performed by your dentist and can help detect abnormalities that could lead to cancer.
  • Patients with Increased Risk: Patients age 18-39 (sexually active; possible HPV exposure)
  • Patients with High Risk: Patients age 40 and older; tobacco/alcohol use at any age
  • Patients with Highest Risk: Patients age 40 and older with lifestyle risk factors (tobacco or alcohol use)

What are my alternatives?

  • Because not all insurances cover ViziLite yet, it is an out of pocket cost ($40) for our patients at this time and choosing not to have the exam is always an option. We will still perform a very thorough visual exam of the soft tissues of your mouth looking for any abnormalities that may require further examination.

What happens during the ViziLite exam?

  • The ViziLite Plus exam is a painless exam that we can perform in just a few minutes. ViziLite Plus uses a light source that helps identify abnormalities that may be missed under normal light conditions. We will perform the exam as follows:
    • First we will visually examine your mouth as we do during every exam.
    • Next, you will rinse with a solution that will help to highlight any abnormalities in the soft tissues.
    • Then, we will examine your mouth with the specially designed ViziLite light.
    • f any suspicious lesions are detected they will be marked with a blue dye and documented in your chart. The dentist will then determine whether it is necessary to perform further examination of the lesion.
