Crown Build Up Smile

Build Up

What is Build Up?

A build up replaces a portion of a severely broken down tooth so that the tooth can support a crown. It helps to insulate the pulp of a tooth and reduce sensitivity.

Sometimes a post and core are placed in the tooth before the build up is placed in order to ensure the tooth had adequate strength.

What happens at my appointment?

  • In order to determine that a build up is necessary, first we will perform a thorough exam that includes x-rays.
  • We then place a resin-based material on the tooth and cure it with a harmless, high-intensity light.
  • Crown Build Up
  • We can then take impressions for the permanent crown.

Post and Core

  • For teeth that have had root canals or have been severely damaged by decay or fracture, it is important to provide extra stability to the tooth in order to ensure that it will remain strong for years to come.
  • The post is made of either metal or a composite material. The doctor will determine which material is best for your situation.
  • The post is placed in the root of the tooth in need of stability and the buildup material fills in around to make a strong foundation for the crown to be placed on.
